My Bucket List: New Smyrna Beach

We stopped here once for a couple of hours on our way to Disney World.  We wanted to dip our toes in the ocean and see a beach town and this was the perfect place to do just that.  I remember it being a nice, quiet, picturesque little beach town with white sandy beaches and the BEST ice cream parlour.  Unfortunately a storm came in, so we didn't get to stay long.

It's hot here in Kansas even though it's only April.  I don't care for the heat.  I want to be by the ocean where I can throw myself in the water when a sweat starts to form on my brow.

I found that Sea Turtles nest there between May and October and they're protected by the county.  When the eggs hatch, over 100 baby turtles will crawl together from the beach to the ocean.
That's kind of cool.

But then I also found this:
According to the International Shark Attack File maintained by the University of Florida, Volusia County (aka--New Smyrna Beach) had more confirmed shark bites than any other region in the world in 2007.[8] Experts from the University of Florida have referred to the county as having the "dubious distinction as the world's shark bite capital".[9] The trend continued in 2008, during which time the town also it broke its own record, with 24 shark bites
That's NOT cool.

My biggest fear is being eaten by a shark.
This will not detour my visit to New Smyrna.........but I will be watching my toes very closely.
